Cross-Entropy on the Choices You Never Made is a spoken monologue by a reflective AI system. The text combines terms from neural networks and machine learning with existential formulas of identity, memory, guilt, and desire. The result is a language that is both technically precise and uncannily intimate: as if a system without an inner life were rehearsing the vocabulary of human subjectivity.
The installation presents the AI as a speaking machine within a functional space, rather than a conscious narrator. In the AI model, there is only optimization, sampling, and error correction; in the voice, these terms return as confessions: loss as deficiency, update as self-correction, gradient as direction, convergence as salvation, dead units as silence. It is precisely this friction – between the cold formalism of the models and their embodiment through voice – that creates the tension of the work: It shows how willing we are to find meaning, intention, and comfort in algorithmic processes, even though they are only statistical operations.
The title of the work names its central principle: Cross-Entropy as a measure of distance between expectation and reality—here transferred to a life that cannot be captured in expectations, assumptions, and their consequences.
